On 6 March, the Palais des Festivals in Cannes, France, will open its doors for MIPIM 2012, the 23rd annual gathering of real estate professionals. The venue for the renowned property and investment market will attract major European and world investors, developers, banks and financial institutions, as well as cities and regions, along with real estate managers, lawyers and other experts in the property market. Last year saw an attendance of over 18,500 participants from 90 countries who presented their projects on an exhibition area of 17,500 m˛. Also this year, the Czech Republic has understandably decided to participate. MIPIM is always an opportunity especially for the Czech cities and regions which want to present themselves as attractive investment destinations. As every year, cities of Prague, Brno and Ostrava will have their own stands; out of the Czech regions, the Moravian-Silesian Region will have the most extensive presentation. The event also serves as a forum for presentation of multinational investors and developers whose co-exhibiting at the Czech cities´ and regions´ stands confirm the high quality of the Czech investment environment. The list of them includes e. g. CTP, Multi Development or RPG Real Estate.
A RICH ACCOMPANYING PROGRAM OF MIPIM
As every year, MIPIM will have the rich accompanying program with more than 60 conferences and 250 speakers. Worth mentioning is e.g. the traditional summit of the majors and governors of world cities and regions to be held on Wednesday 7 March. The discussions will focus mainly on opportunities and prospects of development of urban infrastructure. As the event is always an indicator of global trends, it is envisaged that leading world economists will deliver their speeches on the prospects of global economy in the current difficult times and on the consequences for the real estate market. In his keynote speech on Thursday, March 8, Joschka Fischer, the former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Germany, will speak about the challenges of the European financial crisis that are so critical for the future of real estate. Great attention will be also devoted to the large sports events (Olympic Games, World Football Championships) and their impact on property market and urban development in particular cities and regions.
PANEL DISCUSSION: "THE CZECH REPUBLIC – THE DYNAMIC HUB OF CENTRAL EUROPE"
The panel discussion devoted to the Czech Republic is held by Reed Midem, the organizer of the fair, in the Agora conference hall, on 7th March at 4 pm. The Czech Republic remains, despite the current turbulence in the European economy, the dynamic hub of Central Europe. The country – not only thanks to its educated and skilled labor force – has great potential to become the centre of the Central European Region for projects connected with the development of promising sectors with higher added value such as innovation centers of science and research, biotechnology, biomedicine (so-called life-science) and information technology. The infrastructure of the country is developing rapidly to meet the needs of such projects. What are Czech cities and regions doing to help the development of such sectors and projects in the current challenging climate? What opportunities do they offer potential investors? - The representatives of the cities of Prague, Brno and Ostrava, together with Moravian–Silesian Region, are ready to discuss the potential of research and development centers in the Czech Republic, along with their influence on the growth of cities and regions. Among other projects, the International Clinical Research Centre (FNUSA – ICRC) and the Central European Institute of Technology (CEITEC) in Brno, Science & Technology Park in Ostrava as well as the IT4Innovations project, creating an IT research infrastructure in the Moravian–Silesian Region, will be on the agenda.
THE CITY OF BRNO
The South Moravian metropolis wants to highlight its vision about its future prosperity based on the knowledge economy and promising sectors with higher added value such as biotechnology, biomedicine (so-called life-science) and information technology. This is why it is going to present at MIPIM, among other projects, the science and research projects for the International Clinical Research Centre (FNUSA-ICRC) and the Central European Institute of Technology (CEITEC), together with projects ALISI and CzechGlobe, conceived by the Brno universities and science centers. Besides, the City will present itself as a promising Central European investment destination in the sector of industry and services, which can be illustrated by the projects of Europoint Brno/Jižní Centrum and the Czech Technology Park (light high-tech industry and strategic services). Furthermore, the City is preparing a creative industry project known as the Creative Centre Brno. The meeting area of the City of Brno’s stand at MIPIM is designed to evoke the atmosphere of the interwar period of the last century – thanks to the borrowed furniture and the model of the world’s most famous functionalist monument, Villa Tugendhat, included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. The villa is open again following two years of extensive restoration, including accurate reconstruction of the construction elements.
This year, like last year, Brno has prepared its exhibition in collaboration with several partners, commercial companies which are success stories in the city. This year’s general partners are CTP and JIŽNÍ CENTRUM BRNO (“South Center Brno”). Also participating are Arch. Design, HAVEL, HOLÁSEK & PARTNERS Attorneys-at-Law, development company PointPark Properties, BRNO INN, operating in the hotel industry, and OHL ŽS construction company.
The part of an accompanying program is a reception at the stand which will be organized on Wednesday 7 March at 11 am. The event will be followed by Moravian wines tasting.
THE CITY OF OSTRAVA
Ostrava will present itself as a city with great potential for a variety of investment plans. Among the most important projects for potential investors belongs, above all, the development of the Science and Technology Park Ostrava. At present, it has an area of 10 hectares, out of which 50% is a built-up area. The construction of two new buildings, where 5,298 m˛ of new office area will be created, is about to commence. And another approx. 26 hectares are being prepared, with the aim of creating 10,000 to 15,000 vacancies in IT, engineering and other hi-tech industries within the period the next 10 to 15 years. Vacant space can be found in the Industrial Zone Hrabová, which significantly increases the attractiveness of the city and the employment rate in Ostrava. Its total area is about 110 hectares. The zone has not been fully occupied; nevertheless, over 40 companies have arrived to carry their operations there and almost 8,000 new job vacancies have been created. Vacant space can also be found in the strategic Ostrava - Mošnov Industrial Zone, spread over an area of almost 200 hectares. This attractive land, suitable for investment, is beneficial for Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Czech company’s subcontractors as well as other companies. Also, investment opportunities arise in light industries, strategic services and research and development within the framework of the development of the international airport.
This year the emphasis will be also placed on the importance of Ostrava as a growing city in the field of hi-tech technologies. The Ostrava Science and Technology Park (OSTP) has been occupied, and two new multipurpose buildings are under preparation by the City, in an attempt to capitalize on this success. In view of this, almost another 5,300 m˛ of rentable area will be added to the OSTP by 2014. Aside from the existing OSTP, a new development area will be created and the entire complex will be extended by 26 hectares. Ostrava will also present a project known as National Centre of Excellence in the Field of Informational Technologies at the fair. Within the framework of this project, it is envisaged that a supercomputer, one of the top 100 highest-performance supercomputers in the world, will be purchased and put into operation in around 2013.
To present a joint exhibition, the City has entered into partnership with companies CTP, Dalkia, Global Networks, HB Reavis Group, Multi Development Czech Republic, OHL ŽS – Construction Engineering Ostrava Division, PRK Partners, RPG Real Estate Management and Vítkovice. The City has also prepared a reception organized at the stand, scheduled for Thursday 8 March at 3 pm. The atmosphere will be further enhanced by the Ostravar beer tasting and the bar offering mixed drinks.
MORAVIAN-SILESIAN REGION
After its successful debut at MIPIM last year, the Moravian-Silesian Region prepared the most extensive presentation out of the Czech regions. Aside from offering its industrial zones to investors, the region is willing to present itself in Cannes, as a region with the great potential for the implementation of research, development and innovation projects. The major of them are exemplified by industrial zones known as Barbora and Krnov-Červený Dvůr and a unique architectural development project, Nové Vítkovice, which is meant to generate flows of investment worth tens of billions CZK in the Moravian–Silesian Region and its metropolis, Ostrava. With regard to the research and development projects, one should mention the IT4Innovations Centre of Excellence or the VŠB–Technical University of Ostrava Business Incubator. Also, a great many development areas will be presented by the Moravian–Silesian Region’s co-exhibitors: the cities of Havířov and Frýdek-Místek.
The Region is going to hold a reception for business partners and potential investors at its stand on Wednesday 7 March at 5 pm, as a continuation of a panel discussion “The Czech Republic – The Dynamic Hub of Central Europe” where the representatives of the Region will also take part. Moreover, the Moravian–Silesian Region will offer an opportunity to practice golf patting and chipping in order to add some variety to its exhibition and, first and foremost, to draw attention to its potential as an attractive tourist and leisure destination. The pleasant atmosphere at the stand will be further enhanced by a Radegast beer tasting.
PRESTIGIOUS MIPIM AWARDS
An inseparable part of the trade fair, like every year, is the presentation of the prestigious MIPIM AWARDS for the best international projects during the last year. This year, the awards will be given in 8 categories: Best hotel & tourism resorts, Best industrial & logistics development, Best office & business development, Best refurbished building, Best residential development, Best shopping centre, Best future project and Best future mega project. Compared with the last year, there is some news: the current status of the world property market is reflected in the changes of categories and increase of their number. New is also a pre-MIPIM online voting system launched on February 7: the project receiving the most votes out of all the finalists will receive the People´s Choice Award. The MIPIM Awards, the culmination of the entire trade fair, will be announced at the official ceremony on Thursday, March 8th.
